Umm, no.
That was my reaction when seeing the results of my test over at Budometer.com, an interactive website that claims to predict what styles of wine you might like based upon your taste in salty snacks, soda, coffee and spirits.
I suppose some people’s preferences are consistent enough to predict what types of wine they enjoy. But not mine: I grew up in the Midwest near Chicago and prefer my coffee black. Budometer assumes that if I enjoy black coffee I’d enjoy intense, oaky wines. No thanks. Rather than blockbuster reds, aromatic whites really get me going.
Two of my online wine amigos - Kathleen Lisson and Lyle Fass - have recently written about the site. Kathleen seemed to have good luck, but like me, it didn’t work for Lyle.
The San Francisco Chronicle recently published a piece of related hocus pocus: Master of Wine Tim Hanni believes our tastes are predetermined by how many taste buds we have. Hanni and Budometer agree that I’m a “tolerant taster” and have the fewest taste buds. Maybe. But so what?
I’m curious if you fare better than I did. Take the online quiz and let us know how accurate your results are.
